Junior & Youth

Our teams play in the Western Bay of Plenty leagues on Saturday morning across our home fields, Links Avenue Reserve & Ocean Downs. Whether you're keen to play competitively or socially, we have several teams in each grade from ages 5-17.

Teams are graded into age groups for the age you are turning this calendar year. For example if you are 12 but turning 13 this year, you will be in the U13 age group. Most teams will train once per week, but this is up to the coach and team to determine the time and day(s) they train.

If you are looking for Federation, NRFL Youth football, please go to our Programmes page here. You will also find information on our other football programmes for ages U5 - U17.

If you're looking for Mini Blues, which is our in-house fun football for ages 4-6, or information on our U7 Boys, you can find this on our Fun Football page here. This runs during the Winter Football Season over Terms 2 & 3.

If you have any further questions, please contact Jacs at admin@tcafc.co.nz

FAQ

Volunteering
The club is always looking for volunteers to help with small roles that won't take too much of your time. We'd love to hear from you if you can help, or have an interest in giving coaching a go. Please get in contact hello@tcafc.co.nz and we will put you in contact with the best person to chat with.

Coaching
We rely on volunteers to coach and manage teams. We do have some Senior players that will offer to coach teams sometimes.
Another option is to enrol your team into the Skills Centre (SKC), where they can train as a team with one of our qualified coaches. It then just requires someone to manage the team on game-days. Details on our SKC can be found here tcafc.co.nz/skc

Fixtures
These can be found on the WaiBOP website (or on their mobile app). Western BOP Junior & Youth Fixtures
GAME TIMES CAN CHANGE. Please double-check after 12:30 on Fridays.

Game Formats, Rules and the Retreating Line
Please make yourself familiar with the rules. This can all be found on the WaiBOP website here.

Cancellations/Grounds Closed
We post these on Facebook by 2pm weekdays and 7-7:30am Saturday morning. If you don’t have Facebook, we have a Facebook feed on our website. Please don’t message us asking if games or training is on, as we can’t reply to everyone.

Sideline Behaviour
Please respect the referee and opposition and let those that have volunteered, coach and manage the team. At TCAFC, we do not tolerate poor sideline behaviour. If you witness any (from a TCAFC member or someone from another club), please email hello@tcafc.co.nz with details, so we can investigate. The kids are here to enjoy the day, it's our job to ensure they are.

Game Days
Please help your coach and manager on game day. Putting the nets on goals or corner flags out can be a massive help. Each team will need to supply a referee for at least a half. We recommend that everyone does the online referee course, it only costs $5 and doesn’t take long. This is a great way to get to know the rules of your grade, like the retreating line (very important). Knowing the rules of football makes it more enjoyable for everyone.
See example image on this page of a draw, which also indicates duty teams.

Which Grade?
Your grade is the age you're turning this calendar year. e.g. If you are 11 now but turning 12 this year you will be in the 12th grade. If you are 11 now and turning 12 next year, you will be in the 11th grade.

Team Forming
In 2018, we removed “trials” and in 2021 this approach was supported by New Zealand Football (NZF) Team Formation & Grading guidance. A full copy of our Team Formation and Grading policy can be found on: tcafc.co.nz/resources.

On Registration, we ask players if there are any teams or players they would like to play with this season. We try our best to accommodate these requests. Don’t worry, if you are new to our club or don’t mind - we’ll place you in a team.

Team Name
If you're not keen on your team name, just let us know hello@tcafc.co.nz

Playing Kit
We play in an Adidas sky blue shirt, black shorts and black socks. For the 2022 season, we will be issuing a free Club playing shirt (blue) and shorts (black). On registration, you can purchase black socks which we can issue with your shirt and shorts.

Additional black shorts and socks can be purchased through our club store tcafc.footballhq.co.nz

Philosophy
Every player is important to us at TCAFC. Our goal is to ensure that all of our boys and girls are playing at a level that meets their needs. We will do our best to create the best environment possible for all players to reach their footballing goals.

Coach Education and Support
Barry Gardiner (Director of Football) and Maia Ririnui (Head of Youth) will be helping support and nurture our junior coaches to develop their own skills and support them in delivering the best football practice. They will be hosting coach education events throughout the year and be available to help all our coaches.

Training
Your coaches or managers will advise you your training day and time. Most of these will be at Macville Park.

Team Communication
Plenty of options like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger are handy. Another popular option is the Heja app, which allows you to set up training and game times that the team can indicate attendance.

Tournaments
Teams are welcome to enter tournaments during the season. A couple of popular ones are the Otumoetai pre-season and Papamoa mid-season (approx July) tournaments. You need to enter these yourself. Keep an eye out for details on the host clubs Facebook pages.

Taupo McCartney Tournament is a big tournament held in the last weekend of the Term 3 holidays. This is an invitational tournament and TCAFC has teams entered in every grade. For grades U9-U11, details will be sent out on how to enter. U12 onwards are teams from our Talent Development Programme.
